Nithya Raman

Los Angeles mayoral politics took another sharp turn this week after city councilmember and mayoral candidate Nithya Raman accused fellow candidate Spencer Pratt of representing “fascism” during a recent podcast interview.

Raman, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and current Los Angeles city councilmember, made the remarks while discussing growing voter frustration in the city. According to reports, she claimed Pratt’s rise in popularity reflects broader political dissatisfaction and compared his campaign style to President Donald Trump

During the interview, Raman argued that voters could “turn to fascism” if city leaders fail to address issues like homelessness, affordability, and public frustration. She specifically described Pratt as a “mini-Trump,” saying his campaign embodies what she views as dangerous populist politics.

Pratt, best known for MTV’s The Hills, has emerged as an unexpected contender in the 2026 Los Angeles mayoral race. Running as an independent while remaining a registered Republican, Pratt has built momentum through viral social media videos and outspoken criticism of city leadership following the devastating 2025 wildfires.

Recent polling has shown Pratt gaining traction among voters frustrated with the direction of Los Angeles. Several reports place him ahead of Raman in portions of the race, while incumbent Mayor Karen Bass continues to lead overall.

The increasingly heated rhetoric underscores the growing ideological divide shaping the Los Angeles mayoral contest as candidates battle over crime, homelessness, wildfire response, and the city’s economic future.
